Towards the end of 2019, Microsoft announced through its Tech Community blog that, “Microsoft Teams is available for Linux users in public preview, enabling high-quality collaboration experiences for the open-source community at work and in educational institutions”. Microsoft further went on to say that, “The Microsoft Teams client is the first Microsoft 365 app that is coming to Linux desktops, and will support all of Teams’ core capabilities.”

Since then, Linux users have been privy to all of the perks of Microsoft Teams without having to give up their Linux OS PCs for Microsoft’s Windows OS. In this article, we will show you where to get the Linux version of Microsoft Teams, how to install it, and how to run your installation successfully.

Installing Microsoft Teams on Linux

To install Microsoft Teams on your Linux OS PC, you will need the following:

  • A running instance of a Linux desktop;
  • A user with Sudo privileges; and
  • A free installer file.

To get the free installer file for Microsoft Teams, head on to the Microsoft website here to download the Microsoft Teams file for native Linux packages both in .deb and .rpm formats. When you have all of these necessities ready, take the following steps to successfully install Microsoft Teams on your Linux computer.

Option 1: Using the Software Installer

The less complicated way to install Microsoft Teams on your Linux is via the use of the GNOME software installer. If you have the GNOME software installer downloaded on your PC, take the following steps to use it to install Microsoft Teams on your Linux PC.

  • Search for the downloaded GNOME application package within your PC;
  • Double-click on the package to open it;
  • When this is done, the package will then open up the GNOME software program;
  • Click the “Install” button.

Once the installation is complete, you are good to go and can get your Microsoft Teams set up and running on your Linux PC.

Option 2: Using the Terminal

If you are more adept at using the Terminal and would prefer to use that as your chosen method to install the Microsoft Teams application package, then you should try this second method. It’s my preferred method, as I prefer using the Terminal for all tasks for which I have the option of and chance to use the Terminal.

  • Open a terminal window;
  • Cd into the folder you saved your download to;
  • To install the Microsoft Teams package, type in the command sudo dpkg -i teams*.deb.
  • Alternatively, if you have downloaded more than one version of the Microsoft Teams installation file for Linux, replace teams*.deb in the command above with the full name of the file (appended with the .deb extension, of course).
  • Then type in your password to authorize the installation (since you used sudo).

The installer program will then run your package and when the process is complete, you will be able to launch Microsoft Teams from your app drawer or through the Terminal.
